My journey with yoga is a long and winding tale, spanning the last 15 years. It began as a complementary therapy for severe depression and eating disorders in my late teens, in the ‘burbs of Calgary, with a book borrowed from the local library. Not a studio in sight, my practice took place in a 6 x 3 foot space in the basement room of my parent’s home. It became my tiny, private sanctuary; a quiet space in an increasingly loud and distant exterior. My practice continues to provide me with this solace and respite, and now I have the opportunity to share it with others.

In February of 2014, I graduated from 200 hour yoga teacher training at Karma Teachers College in Vancouver, Canada. Karma Teachers is a free-by-donation studio located in the downtown Eastside of the city, bringing yoga and healing to a population that would otherwise be unable to afford it.  Through Karma Teachers I received training in hatha, vinyasa, yin, restorative and kids yoga. Since graduating, I have been teaching two to three times weekly at Karma Teachers, donating my time and giving back to a community that has given so much to me. I have taught several series of classes with the University of British Columbia and Vancity Credit Union, as well as creating unique "pop-up" style classes with local businesses in the city.

I have since graduated from a 21 hour mentor program with yoga educator Shannon Cluff, as well as a four month kundalini and physiological-based addictions-recovery training program with Dr. Gabor Mate and Sat Dharam Kar, ND, called Beyond Addiction: The Yogic Path to Recovery. The most recent addition to my education is a 300 hour Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Training Program with the Yoga Veda Institute in Ajijic, Mexico in December 2015.

We all have baggage, stories, "stuff", full backpacks of pain, trauma and grief. I'm here to help you lighten the load with yoga, Ayurvedic therapy and a little giggling. Yoga is meant to be accessible and inclusive, and I want EVERYONE to understand that they can start from wherever they are. You don't even need to be able to touch your toes to do it!  Yoga is an ancient science that is proven to improve strength and flexibility in the body and bring positive changes to the mind. Yoga is not just ASANA (physical postures); it incorporates PRANAYAMA (breathing techniques) and DHYANA (meditation).  Yoga understands that mind, body and spirit operate as one unique and complex system, with each part affecting the whole. There is no separation. Wherever you are on your journey, I can work with you to  help to calm your storm...or rock your boat!

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, or Ayurvedic Medicine, is the ancient science of life. Developed thousands of years prior to traditional western medicine, it is considered to be the basis of all other practices and continues to be one of the world’s most sophisticated and effective mind-body health systems. Ayurveda is a complex system that takes into account all parts of the SELF: Mind, Body and Spirit. It is designed to help people to understand their own unique and powerful self-healing potential.

Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy

Ayurveda and Yoga are the peanut butter and jelly of ancient wisdom: one does not exist without the other, and if it does, it is incomplete.  Yoga and Ayurveda work best when they are applied to the individual as therapeutic tools. I can connect with you in a personal, one-on-one setting to address your health concerns, including diet and nutrition, habits and exercise, to design a personal, holistic health-care strategy to complement your current therapies and optimize your health and wellness.

WORDS from Kind Souls and Kindred Spirits (aka TESTIMONIALS)

I have nothing but the utmost respect and love for Mercedes. She offers a warm heart, a beautiful smile and a gentle practice on and off the mat. She is shining example of a true yoga teacher - Timothy
"I have taken Yoga at a number of places and from different instructors and Mercedes' class compares with the best of them. Mercedes' unique blend of Hatha flow and Yin Yoga is a rejuvenating workout that left me both more flexible and grounded. Her gentle, compassionate energy creates a calming environment for the session. I especially appreciate her attention to details such as pose adjustments/deepening and use of aromatherapy during Savasana." – Paula
"I have had so many special "om" moments while doing yoga under Mercedes' careful guidance! She is an incredibly gifted teacher and healer and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to practice with her. I leave her classes feeling renewed and rebalanced.
